    printer friendly version

Question: Why aren't minors allowed to vote?

Answer: The United States Constitution addresses the age issue of voting in Amendment XXVI (26th) section 1,

'The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.'

Minors can't vote because our Constitution, which is the higest law in the Nation, says they can't. As you can read in the 26th Amendment above, only adults age 18 and older may vote.

Before the 26th Amendment was passed in 1971, people could not vote until they were 21 years old. For more on American Voting rights, see Amendments 12, 14, 15 and 19.

I think that kids shouldn't be allow to vote yet because some just like to mess around with stuff and they dont even know what's good not only for them but for other people. In other word they are not responsible enough to make this type of decision.

I think that we shouldn't be allowed to vote just yet. We think that we're mature enough to vote responsibly and are aware of these politicians' capabilities of being a leader. We should think twice before doing something for our actions may add up more to the gravity of the situation.

The ammendment states that the states cannot deny someone over 18 the right to vote. This is wrong and should be changed.

I agree whole heartedly. Voting is not a right it's a privalege. It's just another hope to look forward to when we reach the required age. I believe democracy can work when it's people know what they are voting for and what outcome it will bring. Personally I can't wait to vote but I'm willing to wait and let years of growing help me make my decision not what some consumeristic influence is going to tell me.

I agree with the fact the we should be able to vote. but the reality of the matter is that there are well over enough teenagers that are not informed of politics and are truly not responsible enough to make such a decision. One must ponder...if we truly were to get the benefit of voting, would it hurt us or help us? Now if we could hand pick and choose who's qualified to vote, that would be a different story.
