Speak Up! - View Question #335 |

Question: What is the law against 'burning' a music artists CD?
Answer: It is against U.S. and international copyright laws to copy an original work created by someone else without permission. The copyright laws apply to music CD's. The same copyright laws also make it illegal to copy movies -- as you know, if you have ever read those warnings that appear at the beginning (and end) of a rented videotape or DVD. Likewise, if you check the cover of any music CD that you purchase, you will see that it contains a notice under U.S. and international copyright laws warning against making copies without permission.

I WATCH VIDEOS AND DVDS AND IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, THE MESSAGE PROHIBITS PEOPLE FROM COPYING UNLESS IT IS FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL USE. IF I DOWNLOAD SONGS AND BURN THEM ON CDS TO PLAY IN MY CAR, THAT IS MY OWN PERSONAL USE. I COULD UNDERSTAND IF PEOPLE WERE BURNING CDS AND SELLING THEM. I THINK THE LEGAL SYSTEM IS SCREWED UP WHEN MORE FOCUS IS PLACED ON PEOPLE BURNING CDS THAN ON PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY COMMITT CRIMES.

b) You have the music for your own personal use and are not distributing it to others for profit (or no profit at that)
c) It may be music that is incredibly hard to find (like something foreign or something that might be by an unsigned artist, thus being harder to get ahold of) If this is the case, I think it is okay... but once again, it all goes back to what you are doing with the music after you have it. I think that certain people should be slightly more educated before they comment on the law. They may also want to take an English class so they may learn proper grammar and how to spell.

i think you are right if your not making a profit off of the burnt cds what is the big deal they price gouge the cd prices anyways hacking them up so high you have to pay $20 for one cd. i saw a no doubt cd for 13.00 and their older tragic kingdom cd for 16.00 what is up with that. anyways it costs really low to make the stupid cds they just want high profit for the little work they do. i think burning cds is fine
