Question: Why is changing a sales tag shoplifting?

Answer: It is considered shoplifting because the person switching tags is paying less than the true purchase price for the product and depriving the store of the rightful amount of the product. Arizona Law is defined in A.R.S. 13-1805 (a) (3).

Changing the price on a tag IS shoplifting, because you are not paying for the entire product. If you change the tag to half of the original price, you only pay for half of the item. Stores charge more than they pay to make a living. This is called "profit".
