Question: What are the penalties for Jaywalking?
Answer: Jaywalking is a term used to describe when a pedestrian crosses the street without regard to traffic regulations. Kids usually use the term 'jaywalking' when someone crosses a busy street outside of a designated crosswalk.
Arizona Law states that 'between adjacent intersections at which traffic control signals are in operation, pedestrians shall not cross at any place except in a marked crosswalk.' (ARS 28-793.c) However, Arizona law lets each city and town in Arizona to determine specific rules and penalties for Jaywalking (ARS 28-791), so there are differing answers to this question.
For example, in Tempe, AZ, jaywalking carries fines up to $64.00.
Be aware that all crosswalks are not painted or 'marked' on the street as crosswalks. Unmarked crosswalks exist on all corners of most intersections, regardless of whether or not they are painted.
