Speak Up! - View Question #106 |

Question: May I move in with an adult without my parents' permission?
Answer: When you are 18 years of age you may move in where and with who you wish. Before you turn 18, your parents have the right to control you and the duty to support you in most states, certainly in Arizona. The right of control may not be abused by parents, and may be lost if it is abused. However, a court will not stop a parent from controlling a child unless it can be shown that the parent is doing something wrong.
A parent has the right to tell you where you may and may not live. Indeed, if a parent doesn't exercise proper control over a child, the child can be judged dependent and the state will take over and tell the child where to live.
If you move in with another adult, your parent can come and get you back, and can use the police to do so. This can cause problems for the adult that you moved in with.

The officer at my school told me when I turn 16 I can legally move in with my dad without my mom's permission and without having to go thru court. Is this true?

I say if you want to move in with him, and can, then do it, and more power to you.

There are things in life we wish we can change, and one of the most frequently ones is "Can I move out and be on my own?" and everyone has many problems living at home. But if you are really being abused then you need to do something, BUT TAKE MY ADVISE AND DONT LISTEN TO CPS BECAUSE YOU WILL GO THROUGH HELL. THEY SENT ME TO A FOSTER HOME, I STOOD STRONG DID WHAT I NEEDED TO DO, BUT CPS KEPT ADDING THINGS ON ME AND SAYING I NEEDED TO DO OTHER THINGS TO. SO IN OTHER WORDS WERE SCREWED BOTH WAYS. I THINK ALL THE 16-17 YEAR OLDS SHOULD COME TOGETHER AND MAKE A LAW PASS. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE
