    printer friendly version

Question: May I move in with another adult without my parents' permission?

Answer: When you are 18 years of age you may move in where and with who you wish. Before you turn 18, your parents have the right to control you and the duty to support you in most states, certainly in Arizona. The right of control may not be abused by parents, and may be lost if it is abused. However, a court will not stop a parent from controlling a child unless it can be shown that the parent is doing something wrong.

A parent has the right to tell you where you may and may not live. Indeed, if a parent doesn't exercise proper control over a child, the child can be judged dependent and the state will take over and tell the child where to live.

If you move in with another adult, your parent can come and get you back, and can use the police to do so. This can cause problems for the adult that you moved in with.

I am in the same boat as you. The only difference is that I am adopted. There are a total of 8 children in the house. Five of the kids are boys and of the same age, 11-13. The parents abuse the kids both mentally and physically. Then they procide to compliment them and take them out for ice cream or movies. I called CPS and told them what was going on in the house. CPS came out and investigated the house and the whole family. The parents and kids lied and I was not believed. It's been about 2 years since that incident and now every time my father hits one of the kids, they scream at him how much

I will be 18 in less than 3 months. I have been diagnosed with depression and I live with my grandparents. They do not allow me to see my mom and we legally are allowed. My oldest brother was forced into a local "boys ranch" because she hated him and they are both very verbally abusive to me and my younger brother. Not only do they not support us in anything other than unhappiness but we also have to put up with fist fights between the two of them and daily world wars about the hassle of them waisting their retirement on us. It's bull crap and having been taken out of a home of drugs that NEVE
