    printer friendly version

Question: Is it lawful for parents to charge rent before I am 18?

Answer: Yes, parents may charge their child rent for living premises before the child eighteen years old. While it may sound improper or unfair, such practice is governed by Arizona Law (Revised Statutes Chapter 10, which is landlord & tenant law, and parent & child law, including Arizona law governing child abuse (ARS §13-3623)).

Provided that the child has the means or ability to contribute to the costs of his own care and support, including costs for shelter, and provided that such contribution is reasonable, it would probably be acceptable to assess a child costs relating to rent. In the event that the child is unable or unwilling to pay rent to the parent(s), the parents may have remedies or discipline which they may seek or impose, which also must be reasonable and which may not amount to child abuse under the law.

Well, let's just say when I was a teenager, I hated that law. I thought it was so stupid! Why should I pay to live in with my parents? I'm family right? Well now 2 years later, I thank my parents. This "stupid" law actually may help you out some day. It helps you realize the importance of the dollar bill. I was charged 20$ per week. I can understand some parents may take advantage of their children, but overall, most of them are trying to instill good money spending habbits into their childs life. As long as this law doesn't get out of hand. I'm all for it.

Children under 18 years of age are considered just that CHILDREN! I believe that it is not only irresponsible for a parent to charge their children rent, but it also destroys what teenagers have left of their childhood. I could understand teenagers having to pay for their car or automoblie insurance, but housing is a necessity. I know that my parents would never even think of asking me to pay rent because they believe it is their responsibilty to take of me. Not to say that I am not capable of getting a job or helping out around the house, but I will not pay rent until I am an adult either liv

I think this law is absolutely ridiculous! I'm sixteen and because of this stupid law my parents charge me rent. It's not 20 dollars a month either, it's 125 dollars a month and I pay for everything that I want or I need on top of that. I think that laws like this are unreasonable and that parents take advantage of them. Please some one help us out.

I think this rule is totally stupid. If I am being forced to stay in my parents house until I turn 18 then I'm not going to give them anything. I don't want to be here and I'm not gona pay rent for somthing that I have no say in.

I think there should be a law about parents charging rent. If the goverment makes us live with our parents before we are 18 than we shouldn't pay rent to our parents. We don't have a choice about living somewhere, just our parents house. It's like someone choosing a house for you and you have to pay no matter what! That is my response.
