    printer friendly version

Question: Can a parent spank their kid at any age before 18 years old? I don't mean beat the kid just spank them?

Answer: Arizona law does provide that parents and persons acting as parents, including school personnel, may use corporal punishment (spanking). The punishment must be reasonable and not excessive.

In Arizona a child is anyone under the age of 18, and until you are 18, you are under the care, custody and control of your parent or legal guardian.

The Arizona Legislature passed a new law that went into effect on August 12, 2005 that allows minors to be emancipated. However, emancipation is a very difficult process that few are eligible for. See the LawForKids.org Laws page for more information.

I am a 17 yr old female. My parents still use corporal punishment on me and my siblings regardless of our age if the crime we have committed warrants it. We are usually sent to our rooms to think about our behavior, and then, after an appropriate amount of time, my parents come in with the paddle, talk to you some more, and then make you assume the position. Usually, we get paddled on the bare bottom, and it hurt more than you would ever believe!!!! However, we know our parents love us, we know they only punish us for our own good, we know why we are being punished, we know that if you do

My cousin recently got into a fight, and recieved corporal punishment. I think the school contridicted itself. They wanted to teach my cousin not to hit, because violence solves nothing, so they paddled him as punishment? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

TAKING THINGS AWAY FROM CHILDEN DON'T ALWAYS WORK. PARENTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SPANK THEIR CHIDREN WHEN THEY'RE OUTER CONTROL OR CHILD WANTS TO FIGHT THEIR PARENT'S BACK.

I have nothing but contempt for parents who do not control their children, and most of the time kids need to be spanked in order to be controlled. If there are exceptions to this rule, great. But basically the country has gone down the tubes from lack of discipline, including spanking.
