    printer friendly version

Question: At what age can kids be left at home alone?

Answer: Until a child becomes emancipated, his or her parents have a legal obligation to provide for the child's supervision and welfare. The principal ways in which a child becomes emancipated are when he or she turns 18, gets married, or joins the military, whichever occurs first. Leaving a child alone at home really depends on whether the parent believes that particular children have the physical and mental capacity to care for themselves during the absence. The parent's actions will generally be judged on whether the parent acted as a reasonable, prudent parent under the circumstances. There is no set age where a child is deemed self-sufficient, other than through emancipation.

I just moved in a week ago and it was finally cool enough to have the windows open this morning. I heard lots of yelling from next door and none of it sounds like an adult voice. It is a schoolday and it sounds like a preteen boy yelling at a younger (4-6) boy. I her lots of "shut up!" and "go to your room!" No insults or belittling or anything like that, yet. But, I do hear what sounds like the older boy hitting or spanking the younger boy and the younger boy crying. This has been going on for a few hours, on and off. It is nearly noon, now. What should I do? Help!

I was wondering about the laws of Arizona, because I left my three children at home alone for a half hour and when I returned the police were at my house and took me to jail my children are 11, 5, 4 and my 11 year old is responsible enough for that time frame I believe but now Im getting charged with three accounts of felony child abuse.. Please let me know what to do!

A mother works weekends 7pm to 7am and leaves the 5 and 6 year olds with a 13 year old, plus the 46 year old boy friend stays all night while the kids are there. Is this legal?

I have a neighbor with a 10 year old an a 2 year old. The mother works a late night shift 11-7 and is home before the children wake up. I am concerned that they are left alone but she only leaves them on the weekend. The 10 year old is nice and good and takes good care of the little sister. Does this sound like something to call social services or the police over.
