Speak Up! - View Question #166

    printer friendly version

Question: I am 11 years old and would like to be able to get my last name changed to my step dad's. What do I have to do?

Answer: People who wish to change their name have to file an application in the Superior Court of the county that they live in. When minors (or children) want to change their name, the court considers what is in the best interest of the child. The court considers factors such as the wishes of both natural parents, the effect of the name on the child; and how a name change may affect the child.

I am 19 and would like to change my lst name to my fathers last name. I have had my mothers first husbands name all my life. I have never met that man either, and I have always wondered why I have his last name when I was young. Now that I am older I have made my decision to change my last name. My father agrees as well. We had not had contact for a very long time and now we have some. How would I go about doing this? If anyone can help, let me know! THANKS!!
