printer friendly version
Question: If you are caught with a loud car stereo disturbing the peace, what is the penalty?
Answer: Disturbing the peace is usually a misdemeanor, which means you can be fined up to several thousand dollars and be placed in jail for several months. The penalties vary by state. Laws about loud music and disturbing the peace are usually city ordinances. For example, the City of Dearborn Heights Ordinance No. H-63-6 [2.5] in Michigan makes it unlawful to make or assist in making any noise, disturbance, trouble or improper diversion, or any rout or riot, by which the peace and good order of the city are disturbed. You could find out what your city's laws about car stereos and the penalties by calling the public information office of your local city.

The law itself is not fair to the users, and anyways, if it bothers you its only a couple of seconds when a person drives by. Plus its just like a ambulance driving by, nothing wrong with that, I dont hear you complain about that, and their sirens have wayyyy more decibles than a cars, and well hey let the people who spend all there money on there stereos have fun.
I mean i can agree with the fact that its immature and obnoxious, but still the law shouldnt be set forth like that, I dont like killing, but our soldiers are killing all around the world. I dont like peopple commiting crime

The Sound Ordience should be acting in the same process of a speeding violation. For Ex: the police has a radar to detect how fast you are going, and as the driver you have CONTROL on if you want to speed over the marked limit or ride under it. But with Sound police SHOULD all have a decibel meter, and a marked "Decibel" limit giving the driver control if he/she wants to break the DB limit or "boom" under it! but as for sitting in your car or house and you hear some music that MIGHT not even be that loud but it annoys you as a officer and you say to yourself "Oh i gotta go ticket him

first, you should learn to speak proper english. second, nobody cares what you listen too, no one complaining about too much noise is complaining about the band or singer your listening too. However, if i ran a jackhammer outside your house because it was music to me, id expect to be arrested. It's rude obnoxious behaviour and your noise invades our homes and disturbs us. As for spending all that time and money, so that gives you a right to harass and annoy everyone everywhere and anytime you want, well i spent alot on my fifty caliber rifle and time to learn to master it. should i be allowed

I think that the law on stereos is not right because the police shouldn't be able to take a car steroe that you payed thousands of dollars for. To me if you have a stereo you should be able to play it as loud as you want but you have to respect the law if they pull up beside you.

Are you dumb or what? Young people (and some old) who feel that it's ok to play music to the point where others have to listen to it are just plain rude and extremely immature when it comes to treating others with respect and decency. So many people today are into themselves...if it feels good...do it, without much thought given to anyone else. Loud car stereos can wake people out of a sleep, casue emotional distress, and, perhaps worst of all, can permanently and seriously damage the drivers and occupant's ear. Wait until they are 30 and the ringing starts in their ears and will never....
