Question: If you are caught with a loud car stereo disturbing the peace, what is the penalty?
Answer: Disturbing the peace is usually a misdemeanor, which means you can be fined up to several thousand dollars and be placed in jail for several months. The penalties vary by state. Laws about loud music and disturbing the peace are usually city ordinances. For example, the City of Dearborn Heights Ordinance No. H-63-6 [2.5] in Michigan makes it unlawful to make or assist in making any noise, disturbance, trouble or improper diversion, or any rout or riot, by which the peace and good order of the city are disturbed. You could find out what your city's laws about car stereos and the penalties by calling the public information office of your local city.

I live about 200yrds from an intersection, and as I'm typing this there is a car at the stop light booming his base right into my house! How long can a stop light be?... There is also a store on the corner and the teens park their cars and leave the stereo on for the ten minute store purchase and God help if they use the payphone! What the kids "do" realize is that bass travels through the woods, over the hills, and into our homes. Sometimes the only way to get away from the drum drum is to go outside, so basically their running me out of my own house! I think the laws are justified!

Joe, I can understand your point. Believe me, but here's the problem. I know how loud your system is from what you've explained. I live right up the road from a gas station, and regardless, it's loud when my windows shake. You're not taking into "consideration" those around you that it bothers. It's flat out disrespectful. Tell you what my friend, I'll come up to your house and 3 am and play Mozart with the same equipment, and we'll see how you like it.

As I was saying, I do not believe that I was doing anything wrong, as people have previously posted, why does law enforcement hinder you for such a cause. To me, this is pointless. Kids should be able to listen to their music as loud as they want, it doesn't matter. I wasn't causing any disruption to other drivers, I wasn't harming anyone in any way, except myself and the others in my car which they do not mind. I am going to fight this ticket because I believe that there is no point to it at all. Thanks for your time everyone, post again if you have any input on my scenario.

Alright, its March 2nd, 2004. I have an extremely loud sound system, you can hear it 8 blocks away if that gives you any idea...anyway, on to the story. At a redlight I noticed that there was a cop behind me, I turned it off my system out of respect, and continued driving. The cop was behind me the entire time for about 100 feet. As I continued on my way. I see flashing lights, and said, great. The cop asked me for license, registration and insurance. I ended up getting a ticket for, "a loud stereo". Now, I can understand if this was at 9:00PM, but it was in the middle of the day
