Speak Up! - View Question #485 |
printer friendly version
Question: Is it constitutional for a PUBLIC school to enforce a school uniform such as Khaki pants and white shirts?
Answer: Yes. The Arizona Court of Appeals has ruled that a public school's mandatory student uniform requirement did not violate students' freedom of speech or any other civil liberty. Federal courts in other states have also upheld student uniform policies.

What I hated the most of high school was how dressing different made so much of a difference. I felt exceptionally uncomfortable with how immodestly some of the girls dressed....and for what? It's a sad day when they have to dress like the new Christina Aguilera just to get attention.

I think that it is very unconstitutional. I just graduated from school and being told what to wear to school does not help one to identify ones own self and find out whom they are as a person. I do not believe that anyone should be told how to dress to school or anywhere else for that nature especailly when they are 18 or older.

School uniforms violate our first amendment! We have the right to freedom of expression, and no one should tell us otherwise! Students, especially, need to express themselves with clothing, as we will all reflect our personalities upon our clothing. If schools have kids in khakis and a white shirt, they're saying that everyone is the same, that students cannot differ from each other. School uniforms (added to schools) make us into cubicle drones! If dressing how you want to dress is "rebellion," then so be it.

I personally think that's a good idea for very large public schools in places like L.A., but I live in a small town, and the security really sucks anyway, and uniforms wouldn't do much good because our district has no idea what they are doing.
