Speak Up! - View Question #630

    printer friendly version

Question: If it is not stated in the student handbook, can the administration ban trenchcoats?

Answer: Yes, most student handbooks reserve to the school principal authority to prohibit clothing of any type that is disruptive, and the courts tend to defer to the judgment of the principal on this question.

Remembering that trenchcoats were used to conceal weapons used in the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, a court probably would support a principal's judgment if he or she determined that a trenchcoat is threatening or disruptive of the school environment.

I don't agree. I have many friends who dye their hair pink, blue, and orange AT THE SAME TIME, but wouldn't hurt a fly. Really, they run from any kind of violence. Don't knock it unless you know what you're talking about.È
