Speak Up! - View Question #99 |
printer friendly version
Question: Is it legal to drink in your own home if your parents condone it?
Answer: It is not legal for your parents to give it to you. As with most things, if you behave sensibly, no one will know. Many people think that no child should ever be given liquor. Many people think that children should be taught to drink at home. The law hesitates to invade a home and to tell people how to raise their children. However, when things go to beans, there can be all sorts of trouble from things which would not ordinarily give trouble. For example, a father gives a sip of beer to his children occasionally. The mother files for divorce, and tells the court and the local child protective authority about this in order to get custody of the children or to 'get even' with the Father.

As a young father of two childern, I'm not sure how much farther from the truth this person could put this situation. Giving your child a sip of alcohol every once in a while does NOT imply that it is ok to drink underage. It especially doesn't imply that it is okay to drive while drinking. That is like saying teaching your child how to shoot would lead them to go shoot another person. Not true it encourages responsibility and respect. That's all...

I agree with Carleigh. It should be agasint the law to drink anywhere under age. I also feel that any parent stupid enough to give their child alcohol should be charged with endangering their child. If theythink it won't harm them they are wrong!!!

As a student i believe that a child under drinking age should not be allowed to drink at all including the home. The law clearly states that you are not allowed to drink unless you are of age and when you are given a drink from your parents they are not obeying the law.
When you give your child a drink of alcohol you are encouraging them to go out and drink and are giving them the idea that it is ok to go and get drunk, and then drive. The mothers against drinking and driving don't want kids driving drunk. So when a parent gives there kids
alcohol they are basicly saying that its ok to drin
