Speak Up! - View Question #115

    printer friendly version

Question: Is it legal to get married under 18 if pregnancy occurs?

    Answer:

In Arizona it is legal for people under 18 years of age to marry if they have the consent of their parent or guardian. The permission of one parent is enough, but it must be the one with legal custody of the minor to be married if the parents are living apart.

In Arizona people under 16 years of age may not marry unless they have the consent of their parents and of a superior court judge. Pregnancy is not enough to allow or to force a marriage, but it can be a factor in the decision of the parent or the court to grant permission.

I got married in Mexico when I was 15 and my husband was 21.The laws are different over in mexico is not a big deal when people our age get together its actually normal. When I turned 20 I came to California for a vacation and all the people would just stare and ask queations like if they hade never seen anything like it.I believe that when you are in love you just dont care of what other people say or think all you care about is being with your love one. I've been married for 20 years and I dont regreat it.
