    printer friendly version

Question: Can my parents Force me to go to Church ? I am Atheist.

Answer: It all depends on your age or capacity. If you are a child or have been found to be incompetent, then yes, the parents of a minor child or guardian of an incompetent person can force the child or incompetent person to go to church (or anywhere else within reason).

For practical purposes, the Constitution (First Amendment), protects your right to BELIEVE anything you want to BELIEVE, regardless of every other factor. So, even if forced to attend a ceremony you don't believe in, your freedom of belief is protected.

This person upset me the most. How dare you critisize those of us who are atheist, and how dare you say that those of us who are forced to go to church dont listen. I came to this page to find help for my girlfriend (who was forced to go to church) because she was brain wash and was never given any other choice but christianity. She beleived all of it not because she agreed with it but because she was given no other choice. She has read the bible countless times and has learned nothing except guilt.

I am also an atheist. It's too bad your parents are making you go to church. Assuming you're good at backing up your atheism then I would recommend just constantly bringing it up while at church. Tell everyone you run into that you're an atheist and only going to church because your parents make you. Then maybe you can start having discussions with people and possibly convincing them exactly how bogus religion is. Trust me, you start making people think twice at church and neither your parents, or anyone else will want you there.

WHY DON'T YOU BELIVE IN GOD!!!! If there is no god, then how was the earth made. Do you really believe that bull about people coming from monkeys? If you don't believe in Jesus, then where will you go after you die. I think your parents are doing the right thing. Listen during church once in a while, you might learn something!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya dude, your Mom is wacko. Tipical for someone who believes in God to think an Athiest is a Devil Warshiper and crap like that. To tell you the truth, your Mom is not going to change. My Grandma is the same way. Its sad, i dont even tell them, Im afraid of what'll happen. Whatever you do, dont change back unless you trully believe in it. Let your Mom know that you dont force your religion on her, why should she? Sorry to tell you this, but chances are your screwed.
