Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

What really annoys me is that even at 14 you cant get a job. Most of the jobs you would be interested in are for 16 year olds. Most of them dont even like it. Let someone who really wants to work or really needs the money work...It just annoying...

I really don't think it is such a bad idea that thirteen year olds should be allowed to get jobs. Of course the jobs would have to be something easy like, bagging groceries to earn a few bucks for the movies, mall, ect. We need to make a stand and prove to the government, they should allow 13 year olds to work.

Hey, I am 13 years old and my parents and i thought that getting a job would be good for me. This could help teens and me learn the real value of money. This law is CRAZY. I mean what person and the age of 12,13, or 14 would want to be a caddy. It would bring in money but it is boring. Kids work hard if they like their job. Anyway this is a stupid law. this is they hardest thing i think i have ever done, and it is looking or a job that is legal for me. i dont want to go mow lawns, or babysit, or wash cars. i will take care of dogs but everyone goes to kennel.I hate this law. it is unfair!

This law makes me crazy! I've wanted a real job for years, and 13 is the big "teenager" year, so why can't we get jobs too? I don't wanna babysit some snotty-nosed kid, or wake up at 4:00 in the morning to go on a paper route. I just want a regular job bagging groceries, or working at McDonalds. Hopefully someday the age is changed down to 13. It does seem to be the year when most kids get the itch to work.
