Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

This law is stupid. Kids should be able to work at a younger age. Maybe twelve or thirteen. If a child can prove that he or she is responsible enough to have a job, they should be able to get one.

I think that kids my age should ber alowed to get part-time jobs. I can help my mom out siome with the bills. Also I can have some money for my own to have something worth buying like school supplies and what not. This is bull that 12 year olds can't have part-time jobs. If you also ask me us getting money can help alot around the house and food

This is not right...we need to make money also so of our parents can afford nice things for us and us teenagers want some cash inour pokets. Also its nice to feel useful because we got to show people that we are responsible for what ever goes on. If we can do yard work babysitting then surly we can work part time minium wage cleaning somewhere. Im just a teenager and i want you people working for the laws to hear my cry.

They made for a good reason, because most kids at that age are immature & not ready for a job. besides its child labor. haha they wouldnt do it for no reason.

Wow I thought it was that once you were a teenager you could get a job. Why can't it be that as long as you can communicate and be able to articulate your thoughts, you can get a job? So many 13 year olds are mature enough for a real part-time job. Not babysitting. A lot of parents, like mine, don't want to be in a situation where a baby's injury would be their fault. Not yard work either, people like me don't live around that type of environment and my mother doesn't want me going over to other people's houses. My only option is a real, part-time paying job. That shouldn't be a problem at 13!
