Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think 13 year olds should be able to have a chance at applying for some jobs. There are alot of smart youngsters out there that need to at least have a shot/chance to prove that they're well-suited enough for the job. I may be only 13, but hey, I still have an opinion and think I deserve a shot.

I'm a 12-year-old girl. Us pre-teens may need money because maybe we dont want to ask our parent. Usually our parents are talking to us about sex and not to get pregnant when you dont have any money, and at my age girls are starting to think about having sex, and well basically..., we need money (just in case).

I'm 13. If us 13-year-olds don't get a job at this early age, how will we learn to be responsible? How will we know how to take care of ourselves? How else will we earn money? By asking, or maybe BEGGING our parents? NO!!! I think the U.S. has age discrimination. I'm not talking about drugs, I'm talking about getting jobs. So we could think of a career faster through life.
