Question: Is it illegal to take freedom of speech from kids in school?
Answer: School's need to maintain a safe environment for students and teachers. The right to free speech is protected by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the US Constitution. However, when spoken words are abusive, offensive or the language is unacceptable, your right to free speech may be limited. Fighting words, those that may create a situation in which a fight may occur, are not protected by the Constitution. Students' rights and the need for safe school environment may sometimes come in conflict. In such cases, the courts have determined that students may have their rights limited.

The united states is hipocritical in its view of freedom of speech. If you teach children about the 1st amendment and don't let them exercise that constitutional right, then that only shows the narrow mindedness of the US school system. If children are taught that america is the land of the free and then are told they cannot use the rights given to them by being americans, then why should we even bother having amendments at all.

I've been all over the US in my time and i've watched the behaviors of the children. I pay attention to what they say, and what they do.
I Think that the kids should be able to say what they wat, as long as it's not harmful, or threatening.

Freedom of speach is not at all hurtfull to school students. Taking that right away is much more harmfull to education. The bottom line is that what you say may not alwayse be morally or ethically right but it's how you feel. The way kids talk is reality ...why try to stop it
