Question: Is it illegal to take freedom of speech from kids in school?

Answer: School's need to maintain a safe environment for students and teachers. The right to free speech is protected by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the US Constitution. However, when spoken words are abusive, offensive or the language is unacceptable, your right to free speech may be limited. Fighting words, those that may create a situation in which a fight may occur, are not protected by the Constitution. Students' rights and the need for safe school environment may sometimes come in conflict. In such cases, the courts have determined that students may have their rights limited.

I believe that we should be able to say what we want as long as it is not threatining.

I would have to disagree on what you people say about the "freedom of speech". It makes sense that some one got in trouble for saying god in front of his or her class because people today are really religious so people don't like it when poeple say something against their religion. I do.

Wow, so many illiterates here trying to attack there school when its obvious that they don't learn a thing there. I agree though, a few of my friends have been suspended with things like the satanic bible or a pentagram both for satanic worship and wicken respectavely. It is complete and utter bullcrap. I tried to wear an anti-nazi symbol to school and they made me take it off. However people with bibles and Stars of David are left untouched. I'm all for making the teaching environment a safer place, but somethings go to far and are not equal.

Well, honestly, i am fed up with the schools and their stupid "District Policies" such as no noodle straps, no racial comments, no saying the word "God" or "Alah" (did i spell that right?), i mean, come on. A kid just last week got a week suspension for saying God in class, A WEEK SUSPENSION!!!! Limited freedom of speech... I think not, more like NO freedom of speech. And not to be to be mean, but there are good reasons that we don't have all the same rights as adults. But that's off topic... I know they can't allow certain 4 letterd words, but the word "God"?
