Question: Does the Zero Tolerance policy for weapons at school violate any of our constitutional rights?
Answer: No. The United States Supreme Court has for years been clear that school administrators have the right to restrict your constitutional rights in order to keep you safe when you are at school. The Court has held on many occasions that because you are in the care of the school during school days, schools can take the steps necessary to maintain safety and order. This means that schools can impose restrictions that would not be necessarily be constitutional when applied to adults in general. Schools have been allowed to restrict First Amendment rights to free speech and press, the Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches; and, of course, the Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms. Although this may sound strict, all of it is intended to keep you safe when you are in school.

what if the person, has a knife in his pocket... but forgets about it and goes to school.. later he is sent to the principles office just because of it, it wasnt used for anything unlawful, yet he is sent to a nearby juvenile detention center for close to a week, then has to go to a higher juvenile center for 2 years, is this fair to the student who is an 1 plus student, good family, and everything else?..

is the zero tolerence policy any fair to the students in any schools? i dont think so, i think it is entirely unfair to the student body, many students are being expelled, suspended, or sent off to juvenile, just because they accidently brought a knife that he did not intentionaly bring now he is in juvenile for 2 years, just for having a knife, the court system just ruined his whole life, his future, everything... this is unfair, a straight a or b student. what a way for a court system to ruin a teenagers life

i think that you are wrong just because your freind was a straight A student it dosent mean that your freind shoulndt be suspended. your freind shoulndt even be briging a pocket a knive first of all, because if she gets mad she could just take out the pocket knive and kill the person. And youre still shoulnt be allowed to bring a knive, i think you should have a licence for it first!

Zero tolerance in the schools has been blown out of porportion! A skit done at school got a 13 year old suspended for five days! And all he did was ask a question if the skit person was going to shoot a gun! Or a child getting beat up from a popular kid the assistant principal likes, didn't even get an in school suspension! If this zero tolerance is going to be part of todays laws in schools, lets get it in writing and know what it means! And let all districts follow the same rules!

My friend was suspended from school for 9 days for having a pocket knife, even though he wasn't being threatening at all. Furthermore, the administration even stated that they never received complaints of him threatening another student. Because of a zero tolerance policy, the student received the maximum of the minimum penalty that was possible. This student never caused any trouble and was a straight A student for all of his years at high school. Simply because he had a knife that he forgot
