    printer friendly version

Question: Can my parents Force me to go to Church ? I am Atheist.

Answer: It all depends on your age or capacity. If you are a child or have been found to be incompetent, then yes, the parents of a minor child or guardian of an incompetent person can force the child or incompetent person to go to church (or anywhere else within reason).

For practical purposes, the Constitution (First Amendment), protects your right to BELIEVE anything you want to BELIEVE, regardless of every other factor. So, even if forced to attend a ceremony you don't believe in, your freedom of belief is protected.

I agree....My parents forced my to go to church . There wasn't a way in the world I could stay home. Now since I was forced to go as a child ,it put a bad taste in my mouth,so to say, about going to chuch.I think if your force you child like my parents did, trying to do the right thing, but don't relize what they could be doing to the child in the long run, or future, it could possiable turn the child against the church or god, making them extremly dislike or even hate it or Him.My thoughts....

Please realize that if you are under 18 your thoughts and opinons are in their early stages. You might change your mind as you mature. Parents sometimes keep minors from doing things they might regret whan they get older. Remember parents were children a loooooong time aaaago. Body piercing, tatoos, sex, drugs and rock-n-roll, can add hardships that will last a lifetime. Hey they can't control your thoughts anyway. Look at all the people at church as a psychology lesson. You have a labratory full of rats to study! Actually I hope your parents are not the hypcritical brand of christians, if so
