Question: Can your principal not allow you to dye your hair an odd color or wear heavy makeup and things like that if its not in the rules?

Answer: Public schools are allowed to adopt reasonable rules for student dress and grooming at school. As a general rule, if what you wear or the way you look is not prohibited by the school's rules, then you can do it.

There is, however, one important exception. Schools can always tell a student to change clothing or remove make-up if it causes a distraction or creates a health or safety concern.

Private schools have much more latitude with regard dress codes.

This is an editorial i wrote to my school newspaper, and it got featured in the Paper.. although, it has yet to do any good. To the Editor: Our school's dress code needs to be lighter. Okay, so some people might take advantage of a lighter dress code, but for us to become independant people, we need to be able to express ourselves - in our own way. With a strict dress code, there is a good possiblility that could NOT happeen. And teachers don't have a dress code, why should we?? They are supposed to be our role models, the people who we look up to why we are in school, and the

I think that the color of your hair shouldn't matter. It's just a way to express yourself and show who you are. Schools say that a hair of abnormal color causes distraction, and it might, but the distraction only lasts for at least a day, and then, you are just old news. After everyone has seen your hair, nobody really cares anymore. I think schools might reconsider this rule, beacause even the teachers dye their hair, it might not be a color like green or purple, but they still do it. I personally think its a stupid rule. What i say is that instead of worring about the student's hair, they sh

the color of your hair is a way of expressing yourself. If the color of your hair has anything to do with what kind of person you are, well.. then the world's gone crazy. Same with piercings. They might be a distraction, but so is the way u wear ur hair. (spikes, dreadlocks, cornrows ect.) and is there a rule prohibiting hair styles? No. So i suggest these "proper at school" YUPPIES shut there traps. - p h o e b e r o s e s a l m o n s

I think that if your hair isn't a distraction to you or your classmates then you should be allowed to do it. Also I think the same thing about pircings.

I dyed my hair purple and the principle told me to change it by morning or I was going to get suspended. I came to shcool anyways and they drove me to a salon and made me change it and also made me pay for it. They said it was a distraction but what was really distracting besides my hair was that the principle was making such a big deal and the students had petitions going around and the were angry. And what about my right to express myself? Am I not allowed to be myself or different than everybody else? I want to be an individual and I want to change the stupid rules.
